Artemis was the Greek goddess of the hunt, wilderness, and chastity. She is the protector of young girls and was believed to have assisted in delivering her twin brother Apollo right after she was born, leading her to become the goddess of midwifery.
Artemis is sworn to always be a virgin and never marry. Virginity is an important aspect of Artemis’s entire persona; the ancient Greek culture deemed virginity is a prerequisite to marriage and married women as belonging to her husband, thus Artemis’s virginity symbolizes her power and independence. In her tales, she constantly ran into men who tried to seduce or rape her or her companions only to have the goddess of chastity deliver swift justice and punishment to them.
Artemis is one of the most famous Greek deities as with her Roman counterpart Diana. Her temple was one of the Seven Wonders of the World, a remarkable construction of classical antiquity, that was unfortunately destroyed by the Greek arsonist Herostratus.
